Starting the Fire

“You cannot, you cannot use someone else’s fire. You can only use your own. And in order to do that, you must first be willing to believe that you have it.”
— I Am Your Sister: Collected and Unpublished Writings of Audre Lorde

There are a few reasons why I needed to start this blog:

  1. I need to write more.

  2. I think people are getting sick of hearing me gush about wine and food. So at least I hope the correct audience finds this content.

  3. It’s a great outlet for me to share the millions of opinions that I have, while questioning them along the way. And without chatting someone’s ear off.

  4. I want more traffic through my website. Let’s be honest, here.

I’m going to keep this part short because I’m sure that 100% of the people reading this right now are family and friends. But I’m Ally - a visual artist lighting stuff on fire and drinking wine in Wisconsin. I write, I read, I paint, I draw; I eat a lot of cheese and drink far too much cab. I may not have any money -but all of those things are such good things, I suppose life isn’t so bad.

These past two years, post-undergrad and pre-doing adult things, I’ve had a few random part-time gigs, (one of them expertly tasting a large variety of wines at a wine shop) and a lot of time to come to terms with the fact that I can no longer guzzle sugary wines and eat Dominos without feeling awful. Hell, I can barely do bread at all anymore. I’ve had a lot of fun, though, researching which foods will make my body feel amazing, as well as my taste buds. I’ve also enjoyed learning more and more about wines, though it’s honestly hard not to be teased as a “snob” for talking about it.  So here we are.

If you’re reading this through my website, my artistic style should already be clear and visible for you. And no, I’m not going to explain my fire-painting techniques via this blog. I will, however, discuss some of my opinions and thoughts about art, creativity, and how these tools can be used to make our world a sparkly, open-minded world. Maybe geek out about some artists and authors. Maybe share a few non-firey techniques that I enjoy using in my work, and inevitably at some point going on a rant about how damn important public art is and how we need more of it.

I want to hold myself accountable; to writing, to learning, to enjoyment and contemplation. And I want you to learn, enjoy, and consider as well! I think it’s our responsibility to always challenge our standpoint, to push ourselves to grow, and of course to experience the beautiful and delicious things this world has to offer. While, ideally, improving it along the way. Start the fire, and keep it burning.

If none of this sounds interesting enough to drag you through another blog post of mine, that’s perfectly fine. However I will keep writing them. And the wine reviews will be a bit shorter and more colorful, FYI.

Thank you for reading. Welcome to my blog. Go play your favorite song.
